What is washi tape used for in decorating?
Washi tape is used to mask off edges and surfaces you don’t want painted — such as the line between a wall colour and a ceiling, around window frames, or along skirting boards. It creates a clean, straight edge when removed after painting.
When should I remove it?
For the cleanest lines, remove the tape while the paint is still slightly tacky — typically 30–60 minutes after application. Removing it after the paint has fully dried can cause the paint edge to chip or lift, especially on gloss or eggshell finishes.
Will it damage the surface underneath?
Washi tape is low-tack and is designed to remove cleanly from most painted, plastered, and primed surfaces without leaving adhesive residue or lifting the existing paint. Avoid leaving it on for extended periods beyond the manufacturer’s recommended time.
Is it suitable for curved surfaces?
The paper construction gives some flexibility for gentle curves. For tight curves, use a narrower tape width for better conformity.
Can I use it outdoors?
Washi tape is designed for interior use. For exterior masking, use a dedicated outdoor masking tape rated for UV and weather resistance.
