Who we are

As you can see on the left, we have specialists in each department who complement each other to ensure that we can help you, whatever your unique requirement.

Our history

Family run Thornhill Brothers first opened its doors in 1980. The store has always been owned and operated by the Thornhill family of Skibbereen town. Henry Thornhill first started an electrical store on Bridge Street in 1955 where Christy Thornhill was raised. Christy then in 1980 went out on his own starting a hardware store, with his brother Michael running the electrical store. Our longevity can be primarily attributed to the ongoing support of the local community and our staff’s dedication to providing exceptional advice, value and service to our valued customers.

The local community

The Thornhill family are active with Co-Action, a local charity which serves the needs of people with special needs. Catherine Thornhill is currently serving on the board of Co-Action. Both Julie and Anne Thornhill who have Cerebral Palsy attend the Co-Action centre in Skibbereen.

The staff of Thornhill Brothers also represents another strong link to our local community.Donie White is a member of the local Fire Brigade in Skibbereen. Kieran Walsh is a very active member of O’Donavan Rossa GAA club in Skibbereen. Julie Kingston is an active member of Caheragh GAA. Anne Hawkins is involved with yawl rowing in Castleltownshend and has served as the Treasurer of the South West Cork Yawl Rowing Association.

The Topline group

Becoming part of Ireland’s largest hardware buying group, Topline, in 1986, has been a crucial support to the survival and success of our business. Alongside the other 150 stores nationwide that are affiliated to the Topline group, we benefit from its bulk purchasing power, from its relationship with the world’s largest independent hardware group, Ace Hardware, and from its ongoing investments in marketing, staff training, and merchandising. Collectively, these factors allow Thornhill Brothers to compete effectively with domestic and international chains, like Chadwicks, Heiton Buckley, Woodies, B&Q and Homebase; and offer our customers competitive prices, better friendly service, and a welcoming shopping environment.

Everyone at Thornhill Brothers is working hard every day to ensure we are around for many more decades to serve our customers.
